We name our candles after real places and we've done it since the beginning in Cumbria. Over the years that taught us something about how people pick them. The big famous names did fine but the ones that really meant something tended to be the smaller towns, the lesser know valleys and beaches people had grown up near or spent summers at. Someone would find the place they knew on the shelf and that was the one they wanted.

So when we started thinking about Newcastle we knew we wanted to do more than one candle for a city this size. We've chosen five places across Newcastle and built a scent for each of them and we've mixed the ones most people will know with a couple you'd only recognise if you've spent proper time in the city. We're calling them the founding five because there's a lot more of Newcastle we want to get to.

The scent has to earn the place

Anyone can put a Newcastle name on a candle. The harder part is building each scent around the real character of the place, so the riverside one echoes the river and the Georgian one the mood of an evening in town.

That's where the work has gone. Five places, five scents, each one drawn from the history, atmosphere and character of where it comes from rather than a literal copy of it.
