Seven years ago, Lakeland Lights was a handful of scents poured in our kitchen after work and packed around family life. Today, your orders keep a small team working across three workshops in Cleator Moor and help us keep making candles tied to places that mean something.
That still feels slightly unreal to write.
When we started, the idea was simple. We wanted to make candles that carried a connection to real places because so many of us hold memories that way. A walk around Buttermere. A windy afternoon dog walk at St Bees. A visit to Kirkby Lonsdale before we ever lived in Cumbria. Places stay with you and we thought scent could help hold onto that feeling.
We are seven years in now and the business looks very different from those first evenings in the kitchen. It is still us behind it but it is no longer only us.

Seven years, briefly
Buttermere was one of the first three scents we made and it still matters to us because it sits so close to the original idea. We were visitors to the Lakes back then, thinking about what to take home for family and realising there should be a candle tied to that place and that memory.
St Bees came shortly after. We used to walk Bella and Custer on the beach there in bracing wind and the candle did something we hadn't expected. People wrote to us about childhood visits, beach walks, family holidays and living nearby. That response gave us the confidence to make more scents rooted in West Cumbria, not only the obvious tourist places. The range has grown beyond Cumbria since, into North Wales and soon to be revealed new locations, but those early West Cumbrian scents still feel like the heart of it.
The team has grown to six. Jo and James, plus Emily, Elizabeth, Abbie and Michaela. We have just taken on a third unit at Phoenix Court this May, with more to be revealed soon.
We have been proud to freeze prices for six of the last seven years. Soy wax has gone up roughly 80% over that time. A medium candle today is the same £15 when bundled as it was in 2019.
This year's Spring Collection has pulled a lot of that story together. It has Buttermere from the place where the idea began. St Bees from those early beach walks. Crummock built around the gorse that flowers above the water from March. Alongside them, Blencathra, Catbells, Windermere and Kirkby Lonsdale. Seven scents tied to seven places.
The Birthday Sale
To mark seven years, we are running our Birthday Sale.
15% off everything from 12:00 BST Monday 11th May 2026 until 23:59 BST Monday 25th May 2026.
The best available discount applies automatically at checkout. No code needed. The discount cannot stack with other offers but the checkout will always apply whichever saving is better.
The Prize Draw
Every order placed during the Birthday Sale will also be entered into a prize draw to win one Spring Collection bundle worth over £100.
The prize is seven medium candles: Crummock, Blencathra, Catbells, Buttermere, Windermere, Kirkby Lonsdale and St Bees.
We chose the Spring Collection because it says a lot about where the business has come from. It has one of the first scents we ever made and the West Cumbrian scent that taught us the strength of local connection, alongside places customers come back to year after year.
Thank you for keeping this going for seven years. Every order still matters so much to us all.
Warm wishes,
James and Jo
