At Lakeland Lights, we believe in making a real difference in our local community. What started as responding to occasional raffle requests has evolved into a focused approach that delivers meaningful impact across West Cumbria.
Developing Our Community Support Strategy
In our early days, like many local businesses, we tried to help everyone who approached us. Whilst we were happy to contribute to numerous raffle requests and local causes, as we grew, we realised we needed a more structured approach to make a genuine difference, especially as we simply couldn't say yes to all the donation requests we were starting to get.
Our Charity Collection and Local Impact
Robin's Brow: Supporting Marathon Man Gary McKee
Our first major initiative was our 'Robin's Brow' candle, named after our daughter Robin. When it launched in 2022 we wanted to support West Cumbria's Marathon Man, Gary McKee. By dedicating 10% of each sale, we raised over £1,200 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria and Macmillan Cancer Support in the run up to Christmas (pun intended)!
Heart of the Lakes: Supporting Local Healthcare
Building on this success, we launched the 'Heart of the Lakes' charity candle lasy year. This special edition has raised more than £1,700 for Hospice at Home West Cumbria so far. We were also fortunate to work with Gary McKee's daughter, Minnie, on a collaborative project that contributed an additional £800 to this vital cause. The Heart of the Lakes candle remains available for a limited time.
Supporting Wasdale Mountain Rescue
Our Wax Melt Advent Calendar project last year supported the essential work of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team, raising more than £1,900. Due to its success, we're bringing this back as a limited edition release during the Black Friday weekend in a special charity bundle.
Announcing Spirit of the Coast: Supporting Whitehaven Sea Cadets
We're proud to announce our newest charity product for 2024: 'Spirit of the Coast.' This latest candle supports the Whitehaven Sea Cadets, who provide invaluable opportunities and skills development for young people in our area. We'll be donating 10% of all proceeds directly to supporting their work.
Making a Difference Together
Through these focused initiatives, we've raised over £5,700 for local causes. This achievement reflects not just our commitment but also the incredible support of our customers who choose to support local causes through their purchases.
